Safety Planning

Every person in the United States is entitled to certain rights and protections afforded by the U.S. Constitution. It matters not whether you are documented or undocumented.

It is important to know what those rights are, to use them, and to contact an attorney or DOJ accredited representative to discover whether there are any immigration forms of relief available for you.

Rights and Planning Guide

The Guide was authored by Immigrant Legal Center attorneys, in collaboration with Nebraska Appleseed, Center for Rural Affairs, Centro Hispano, ACLU of Nebraska, the Multicultural Coalition of Grand Island, Lincoln Commission on Human Rights and Heartland Workers Center, and funded by Jane Shanahan, in memory of her grandmother and mother, Jesusita and Santos Baros.

FFrequently asked questions

NILAH is a centralized hotline and intake service for five nonprofit immigration legal service providers. In other words, NILAH will screen your phone call for possible immigration benefits, and if we are able to identify any forms of immigration relief we will either place your case on a wait-list, or send your case directly to one of the five collaborating nonprofit immigration legal Service providers.

NILAH is not your attorney and cannot provide you extended legal representation.  Instead, NILAH gathers your information to screen for eligibility for immigration legal assistance from collaborating nonprofit immigration legal service providers. If it appears you are eligible for services from a particular nonprofit immigration legal service provider, we will provide your information to them for further assessment and possible legal representation.

We work with Catholic Charities (CC), Centro Hispano Comunitario de Nebraska (CHCN), Immigrant Legal Center (ILC), Women’s Center for Advancement (WCA), Lutheran Family Services (LFS), and the Center for Legal Immigration Assistance (CLIA). These immigration legal services providers employ attorneys and Department of Justice (DOJ) representatives who provide advice and representation on immigration legal matters. The immigration nonprofit immigration legal service providers take cases from NILAH’s wait-list when they have space available for new clients.

Phone calls are typically answered in less than 5 minutes, however if you are on the phone beyond 5 minutes you can leave us a voicemail and we will call you back usually in the same business day. An average phone call lasts around 20 minutes as NILAH’s bilingual intake paralegals will be asking a series of questions. Be sure to be upfront and clear with your answers as your answers will be used to identify forms of immigration benefits.

If you have any forms from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE), or U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), try to have those documents in hand when you call. If you have current legal status in the United States, any card or document stating your status is helpful, such as an EAD card (work permit) or an LPR card. If you have entered and left the United States at least once, try to have the dates you entered and left ready to inform our paralegals. Lastly, if you have any criminal history try to remember the charges and dates, as well as any penalties you received, such as a fine or jail time. This information is also helpful in identifying forms of immigration benefit you may be eligible to receive.

PREGUNTAS FRECUENTES
