Virtual Town Hall to Educate on Supreme Court DACA Ruling

Omaha, NE – Immigrant Legal Center is partnering with ACLU Nebraska, Heartland Workers Center, Nebraska Appleseed, and Nebraska State Senator Tony Vargas for an informational Town Hall following the Supreme Court’s recentruling on the Deffered Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA).  DACA recipient Fatima Flores will also participate in the event. The virtual Town Hall will take place on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 at 5 p.m. and will be hosted via Facebook Live.  Join us at (https://www.facebook.com/events/1337877386417436) to learn more about the decision and next steps.

On Thursday, June 18, 2020, The Supreme Court of the United States held by a 5-4 vote that the decision by the Trump Administration to terminate DACA was “arbitrary and capricious” under the Administrative Procedure Act (APA). This is exciting and welcomed news and means that DACA recipients can continue to live and work without fear of deportation. The overwhelming popular support for DACA is a result of the grassroots organizing by thousands of DACA recipients and advocates across the country.

The DACA Supreme Court Decision Town Hall will feature several speakers, covering different vantage points:

  • Erik Omar, Executive Director, Immigrant Legal Center: Explanation of Decision & Its Consequences
  • Rose Godinez, Legal and Policy Counsel, ACLU: Your Rights, and/or What the Government Can and Cannot Do Right Now
  • Sergio Sosa, Executive Director, Heartland Workers Center: Getting and Staying Civically Engaged, or What Can I Do Right Now?
  • Schuyler Geery-Zink, Attorney – Immigrants & Communities Program, Nebraska Appleseed: Possible Permanent/Long Term Solutions on the Horizon & Advocacy Now
  • Nebraska State Senator Tony Vargas: Apart but Together in Celebration, Solidarity, and Resolve
  • DACA Recipient Fatima Flores: A Personal Perspective

While we are happy with the Court’s decision, and overjoyed with this win, much work remains to enact a permanent legislative solution that provides a pathway to citizenship. For more information on the DACA Town Hall or how you can help with future efforts, please contact Cailan Franz at cfranz@immigrantlc.org or 402-898-1349.
